What do the following all have in common? Apps, games, email systems, banking systems, fire alarm systems, electric vacuum cleaners, car dashboards, coffee machines, washing machines and social media platforms.

The creation of each of these involves coding.

This summer, Coding NZ is giving all NZ children and teens aged 9 to 18 the opportunity to learn coding in free holiday coding activities.

Give your child or teen the ability to create with technology, instead of just consume it, by booking them in for an activity here. It’s fun, engaging, and invaluable. With learning available for every skill level, all are welcome from the very beginners through to more advanced levels. And who knows? An exciting holiday activity which challenges the brain and offers a balancing complement to the outdoor summer excitement might just lead your child to become the next inventor of Google.

Students learn to make websites and games with real coding languages.

Coding NZ, one of NZ’s top private coding lesson providers, was founded by Nikki Trebilco. It takes a fun approach to learning and is providing tutors to help students during the free holiday coding activities.

Understanding that computers can be enjoyable at times and infuriating at others (for all ages!), Coding NZ has taken an expressly ‘human’ approach to the delivery of learning activities. “I’ve tried to remove all roadblocks to learning to code by making it fun and self paced, with tutors available to help if students get stuck,” Trebilco explains.

No one will argue that different people have different learning approaches, and Coding NZ’s curriculum is created with that in mind. “The self paced nature of the curriculum is important, as it lets more advanced students level up quickly – often enabling them to be extended far beyond where they could be within the traditional education system – whereas other students are able to go through the learning content more slowly and be creative with what they learn at each step along the way,” Trebilco adds.

Of course, everyone, even adults, usually start off as users instead of creators of technology. Our various lives include using technology both in and out of the workplace, but how many of us could create the programs we use? As children learn to code they are introduced to the notion that every game, app and service was created by a fellow human being.

Live tutors will be online to help students.

“Our curriculum teaches students how to create websites, games and applications with real coding languages, which is a step above the ‘scratch/drag and drop’ learning done in many classrooms,” says Trebilco.

Learning coding is invaluable for anyone as it engages multiple regions of the brain. The learning itself helps build better thinkers, as learners develop memory, attention and decision making skills. Coding is the language that humans use to tell technology what to do, so …….
